Because Marilyn Monroe is so admired, and so analyzed since her death in 1962, at the age of 36, there have been countless projects about her life, many of them dramas that require an actress – or two – to try the iconic star. je ne sais quoi. All the Marilyns tend to have a few things in common: There’s the screen siren’s voluminous blonde hair—a shortcut to screaming, “THIS IS IT!” — her slim but curved figure and her breathy voice.
Ana de Armas will be the latest person to play Marilyn in a film adaptation blonde, Joyce Carol Oates’ 2000 novel of the same name, arrives in select theaters on September 16th and debuts on Netflix on September 28th. The book was made into a two-part TV movie, featuring Poppy Montgomery and a foreword to the film.Grey’s Anatomy Patrick Dempsey, in 2001, is a fictionalized version of Marilyn’s life.
Already, de Armas’ performance in the newer version has been criticized, with some calling her out of touch. She received a big boost on August 1, however, when Marilyn Monroe’s Estate released a statement praising her for capturing Marilyn’s “glamour, humanity and vulnerability” in the film’s trailer, adding “We can’t wait to to see the film in its entirety!”

Farewell, Norma Jean (1976) and Good night, Mary Monaghan (1989)
Stars: ex Hee Haw Cast member Misty Rowe appeared as pre-Hollywood Norma Jean Baker in both films (the latter via flashbacks), and Paula Lane, who appeared on The Mike Douglas Show looking like Monroe in 1980, she portrayed her more glamorous counterpart.
Based on: Scripts by director Larry Buchanan (1969 TV movie). It’s Live!) and, in case Farewell, Norma Jeanco-written by actress-turned-writer Lynn Shubert, explore Monroe’s sexual encounters and, ultimately, speculation that a friend killed her out of mercy.
Answer: A review that lasts from Television Guide The former is called “rancid biofilm” which is “sensationalistic and slimy.”
Marilyn: The Untold Story (1980)
Stars: Future 7 Heaven mother Catherine Hicks as Marilyn, and the future Growing Pains Tracey Gold stars as the pint-sized woman.
Based on: Norman Mailer’s 1973 book Marilyn: A Biography.
Answer: The IS A television movie was nominated for four Emmys, including one for Hicks as lead actor in a limited series or special. Writing for Television GuideJudith Crist praised “a wonderful (and breathless) portrait of the actress Hicks.”
Marilyn and Me (1991)
Stars: A Monroe impersonator Susan Griffiths, who appeared in Pulp Fiction and other productions.
Based on: Robert Slatzer’s claims that he secretly married the screen star in Mexico in 1952, which he set out in two books, Strange life and death of Marilyn Monroe fb2 (1974) and The Marilyn Files (1992).
Answer: Hairstylist Linle White was nominated for an Emmy.
Norma Jean and Marilyn (1996)
Stars: Mira Sorvino as Marilyn, Ashley Judd as the inner Marilyn (Norma Jean).
Based on: Book Anthony Summers 1985 of charge. Goddess: the secret life of Marilyn Monroebiography based on more than 600 interviews.
Answer: Both stars were awarded Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.
Stars: Poppy Montgomery as Marilyn.
Based on: Oates book, the same basic material for the new blonde.
Answer: Although Montgomery did not win major awards, she won especially over some critics, such as one at Diversitywith his “great performance.”
My Week With Marilyn (2011)
Stars: Michelle Williams as Marilyn.
Based on: Colin clark books free, The Prince, The Pretty Girl and Me (1995) and My Week With Marilyn (2000), based on his account of his time working on the set of the 1957 Monroe film The Prince and the girl showwhich co-starred Laurence Olivier.
Answer: The film grossed approximately $35 million on a reported $10 million budget. Williams was nominated for an Oscar and won a Golden Globe, while Kenneth Branagh earned a best supporting actor nod for his portrayal of Olivier.
Stars: Katharine McPhee, Megan Hilty and Uma Thurman play Marilyn at various times in a show-within-a-show.
Based on: This one is different, because the NBC show was actually about actresses Karen (McPhee) and Ivy (Hilty) competing to play Monroe in a Broadway production about their lives. At one point, an old actress, Rebecca (Thurman), also comes in as Marilyn.
Answer: Thurman was nominated for an Emmy for her guest appearance, and the show was recognized for its music and choreography. It was up for the best television comedy or musical award at the Golden Globes in 2013.
The secret life of Marilyn Monroe (2015)
Stars: Kelli Garner (Lars and the real Girl, Pan Am) from Marilyn. Notably, Susan Sarandon and her daughter Eva Amurri play the older and younger versions of Marilyn’s mother, Gladys.
Based on: Lifetime’s two-part television miniseries focused on Marilyn’s relationship with her family and how she tried to hide that part of her life from the public, and was adapted from J. Randy Taraborrelli’s 2009 biography of the same name.
Answer: Reviews of Garner’s performance skewed from meh to wow, but the miniseries picked up three non-acting Emmy nods.
