Cleveland Browns blow 13 point lead to lose to New York Jets

One long streak is over and another one to aim for.

Cade York’s game-winning 58-yard field goal ended a long opening-day losing streak for the Browns and put the prospect of playing against former quarterback Baker Mayfield in the rearview mirror.

The next game gives the Browns a chance to end a losing streak in home openers but they won’t have the added incentive of Mayfield on Sunday against the New York Jets at FirstEnergy Stadium.

The motivation will be 2-0 after two games, another goal that has been elusive for the Browns since their return to Cleveland in 1999.

The Browns won the first game started by quarterback Jacoby Brissett but controlled the game with a powerful ground game, led by Nick Chubb.

Jets interception Jacoby Brissett with six seconds left

In an attempt to get into the field for a field goal for Cade York, Browns quarterback Jacoby Brissett hoped to find wide receiver Amari Cooper. Instead, it was an interception by Jets defensive back Ashtyn Davis to seal the game.

Jets lead 31-30

The Browns gave up a 13-point lead in less than two minutes as the Jets took the lead on a 15-yard pass from Joe Flacco to wide receiver Garrett Wilson.

So, about that lack of miscommunication for the Browns

Lack of communication (probably) bites the Browns defensive backfield again as the Jets score on a 66-yard TD pass from Joe Flacco to Corey Davis. The Jets then recover the onside kick.

Count provides some breathing room

Running backs Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb combined to put the Jets away with 1:55 left in the game. Their efforts, with Chubb’s 12-yard TD run, went all 42 yards on that six-play drive. Cade York misses the extra point. The Browns lead 30-17.

Browns vs. Jets score at halftime, 14-14

The Browns running back Breece Hall ran across the opening in the last second of the first half and he scampered for a 10-yard touchdown reception.

That ties the game between the Browns and Jets at 14-14 after two quarters.

Browns quarterback Jacoby Brissett has just one incomplete pass in the first half, going 12 for 13 for 101 yards and a touchdown pass to Amari Cooper. Nick Chubb led the Browns in rushing with 30 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Cooper leads the Browns with four catches in the first half for 48 yards on four targets.

Flacco has completed 10 of 16 passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. Hall had 46 total yards and seven touchdowns.

Watch Jadeveon Clowney’s sack streak against the Jets’ Joe Flacco

The Jets starting rookie Max Mitchell at right tackle, and Browns veteran Jadeveon Clowney made them pay for it. Next to Myles Garrett on the defensive line, Clowney beat Mitchell to the rim and knocked the ball out of quarterback Joe Flacco’s hand. Clowney recovered the fumble, and was credited with a sack on the play. Words just can’t do this justice:
