Javon Kinlaw’s day-to-day approach will be ‘great’ for 49ers

Kinlaw’s everyday approach is paying dividends for 49ers appeared first on NBC Sports Bayarea

SANTA CLARA – Javon Kinlaw’s steady, methodical approach to the game has already started to pay off on the field, but the 49ers defensive lineman said it’s still just the beginning of his journey.

Kinlaw always wanted to be a factor on the field, but his first two NFL seasons didn’t go as planned. After a second knee procedure that ended his 2021 campaign, the South Carolina product is finally pain-free and the results of his hard work are showing in the games.

Kinlaw told NBC Sports Bay Area that he is nowhere near being a finished product.

“You just have to be patient, it’s not a sprint,” Kinlaw said this week. “You have to be in this thing for the long haul. When you look at it that way, it helps you slow down and not really worry about the future. You just have to focus on one day at a time.”

When speaking to Kinlaw, you almost expect his voice to match his hulking physical appearance. But he is soft spoken, and his words are considered as well as his play on the field. It is very clear that he has significant goals for his NFL career.

Defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans has noted the impact Kinlaw’s improved technique has had on other quarterbacks. The linebacker’s 6-foot-5 frame and long range already have opponents throwing erratically.

Ryans is excited to think about Kinlaw’s full potential.

“What I see from Kinlaw is growth,” Ryans said Thursday. “It’s a steady growth, every week. It’s getting better and better. So who knows what it’s going to be in the middle of the season, the end of the season, how well he’s going to play, but I think he’s going to be fantastic for us.”

Kinlaw’s life has been filled with adversity, which he credits to his mental approach to the game. The 24-year-old is keeping his head down, making every day count, fueled by the same drive he’s had since he was a child.

Without looking too far ahead, Kinlaw remained grounded and focused, which influenced his performance on the field. The great lineman sets small goals for each day and each practice because that will benefit him in the long run.

“The little things always take care of the big things especially with me, that’s just who I am,” Kinlaw said. “I pay attention to the little details because it’s the little details that take your game to the next level.”

Kinlaw’s three tries in his first two club games do not necessarily reflect the impact he has had on the game. Extended double teams are how opponents have neutralized the lineman’s ability to get into the backfield, but that has helped free up his teammates in games.

“I’m happy with where Kinlaw is going,” Ryans said. “It’s exciting because I see him getting even better. That’s the great part about it.”
