However, Raducanu’s strong return game comes to the fore, leading the court and his opponent, and the No. 6 two break points.

A double backhand from Raducanu forces Uchijimi back and that’s a break of service.

With the match level at 15-15, Raducanu delivers a much stronger first serve deep on the T to seize the initiative. That follows up with a successful wide range for Uchijima’s backhand. Two set points for Raducanu.

Raducanu needs another serve, but Uchjima’s return flies long and that’s the first set in the bag for Raducanu.

Raducanu then seizes an opportunity to punish a rather weak second serve from Uchijima’s server, but wins the next point with a cross-court return. Deuce.

Uchijima doesn’t seem like punishing such an error though, and Raducanu lands her first ace of the game to win the game.

It’s only a temporary blip though, as Raducanu’s power in the rallies gives her another break from serving. The first series is now in their hands.

Raducanu’s second serve is once again good enough, but she will be looking to land a higher percentage of first serves against her stronger opponents.

Raducanu long climb to the top

Emma Raducanu continues her quest to reach the rankings again with today’s first round clash against Moyuka Uchijima at the Korea Open.

The world No 77, who is coming off a second round exit at the Slovenia Open last week, opens her campaign in Seoul as the sixth seed against a player 49 places below her in the WTA Rankings.

In Slovenia, Raducanu suffered another injury scare when she lost to Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam in Portoroz.

Raducanu took a wild card into the low-key event and was the top seed but fell to a 7-5, 0-6, 6-3 victory.

No. started Britain’s 1 did well and opened up a 5-3 lead in the first set over qualifier Friedsam, who is ranked down at 213, despite being a top-50 player.

Then Raducanu lost four games in a row and started to look uncomfortable in his movement.

She took a medical timeout at the end of the first set and her left buttock was heavily strapped but she went through the second set only to come up short in the decider.

Today’s winner with Uchijima will face newly crowned Chennai Open winner Linda Fruhvirtova or Yanina Wickmayer in the second round with Magda Linette as her projected quarter-final opponent.
