Jordan Henderson has joined the England squad for the Nations League games against Italy and Germany.
The Football Association confirmed on Tuesday morning that Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who will undergo surgery on a shoulder problem, has been replaced by the Liverpool captain.
Henderson has missed Liverpool’s last three games with a hamstring injury.
England face Italy in Milan on Friday, before hosting Germany at Wembley next Monday.
Germany is the final game for Gareth Southgate’s men before England begin their campaign against Iran in November.
Henderson returned to the squad after Southgate finalized his squad by handing Brentford striker Ivan Toney a first call-up.
Toney, 26, has scored five goals in seven games for Thomas Frank’s side this season, including a hat-trick against Leeds United earlier this month.
After a strong first season with Brentford in the Premier League, his form has convinced Southgate that he deserves a chance to prove himself ahead of the Qatar World Cup.
Elsewhere, Dean Henderson, Eric Dier and Ben Chilwell have been recalled. Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho were out of luck, however, while Arsenal’s Ben White and Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher are also missing.
Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were included despite their lackluster starts to the season. The squad is due to meet next week to begin preparations for their next Nations League game.
Explaining the thinking behind his selections, Southgate said: “This is a bigger squad than usual and part of the reasoning is that we are very close to the World Cup and we feel that although our results were disappointing in the summer, we have to. selected on the basis of form and ability over a long period.
“There were a number of players that we wanted to be involved this time, but that does not mean that this is the end for some of the others who are not involved. He’s a player we know very well so if he can perform at a high level over the next few weeks, he will obviously be under consideration.”
